Discovering Their Strengths

It is very hard to pick just a few from all of the very inspiring stories I witness every day. My Featured Clients section is to highlight the various achievements individuals have accomplished in hopes to inspire you and to also share my extreme privilege to be a part of their journeys.

Greg McCrea

Greg McCrea

Greg has always had an appetite for fitness. He has competed in several marathons in the past, been a gym goer pressing weights for most of his adult life and came to me after retirement with a temperamental shoulder, sensitive back & a tender shoulder. We started with general conditioning which he also supported on his own time. After several years volunteering at the Maple Bay Fire Hall, Greg wanted to expand his education and knowledge by attending the fire academy in Texas. Greg’s fitness regime changed dramatically in order to prepare him for the rigorous fitness testing required by all candidates. I am so pleased and proud to say Greg passed the grueling course, testing and assessments to become a full-fledged fire fighter…..at the age of 61! The incredible part about this is the majority of his classmates were in their 20’s with the next oldest participant being 30! Greg’s hard work, dedication and focus in both life and fitness are truly inspiring.
Joyce Carberry

Joyce Carberry

Joyce lead a very active life prior to retirement from the school board office. She and her husband had previously owned and operated both a cattle farm then local hazelnut farm which kept her both busy and active. After the sale of her farm and moving into a smaller home, having never stepped foot into a gym nor attempting a formalized exercise program, Joyce phoned me. Joyce, slightly uncertain and nervous regarding what a ‘workout’ would entail, arrived at my studio 5 years ago. Since then Joyce attends her sessions 1-2 days per week and can be seen down at the track walking a lap with her walker for assistance. Unfortunately, Joyce suffered a fall a year ago and fractured her pelvis. After rehab and recovery Joyce has returned to her weekly sessions with the objective of maintaining strength, improving joint range of motion and relieving overall stiffness. My inspiration is that Joyce started at the age of 88. While many are intimidated to start anything new, or would be hesitant to restart after such an injury, Joyce had prioritized her well-being and continues to strive to be the best she can be and to continue residing in her own home.
Ruth Rutledge

Ruth Rutledge

Ruth joined my studio in 2005 as a weekly client with the objective of general strength and conditioning. Until then, Ruth had played high school basketball, cross country and downhill skied. After a couple of years Ruth decided to challenge herself further by registering for her first ½ marathon in Vancouver. She followed her running program precisely and 4 months later Ruth ran across the finish line! In 2008 Ruth, wishing to expand her experiences, joined a Learn to Row class and has been a devoted rower ever since. Ruth worked with several other coaches, physiotherapists and myself to navigate through various injuries and plateaus. Ruth has since competed internationally, representing Canada as a master’s rower and found herself on the podium in multiple categories. What an inspiration to witness such dedication, determination and focus!
Tammy Gurski

Tammy Gurski

Tammy began her journey with me, like the majority of people, with the primary objective of weight loss. Over the years I have watched her transform and transition, where she began to embrace and prioritize overall health and wellness, not just fat loss. Having never ran more than 10km, in 2019, Tammy trained and completed her first half marathon 4 months later in Victoria. In 2021, even with my words of caution, Tammy focused and completed the extreme “75 Hard”(days in a row) program which had her exercise every day (twice for 45min) amongst many other requirements. Last year, after training on the local mountains for 4 months, Tammy successfully lugged a 30 lbs. backpack, 50km in total, to bring her to the tip of the Island, Cape Scott. Currently, she can be found cycling, currently training for a 4 day cycle trip in Scotland where she will pedal 40 miles per day on average. Did I happen to mention, I see Tammy at 5:00 am each week in the gym!!? How is that for commitment!! What I admire is how Tammy has embraced a better-rounded, sustainable attitude when it comes to both her fitness and nutrition. Previously, like so many others, she measured her success primarily by the number that reflected back to her from the scale. Even though Tammy has maintained 17lbs of fat loss for 15 years, which was no longer her sole objective. Tammy has set and crushed so many fitness goals along the way and prioritized the nutrients she puts into her body. Tammy not only lives the life but she also has become a role model by supporting and encouraging so many others. It has been such a privilege for me to watch and be a part of her journey.
